Islamophobia: A Challenge for the left

A contribution to the debate by Colin Falconer

The concept of "Islamophobia" is often challenged by intellectuals who proudly proclaim their allergy to Islam as that religion, while others say they are opposed only to "Islamism". They pose as champions of Western civilization, whose values "enlightened" would be threatened by those of an Arab-Muslim world characterized as closed and backward. Other, more subtle, are conducive to the emergence of Islam as "modern" or Europeanized. They pass over in silence of course the oppression of women and homophobia in France or the United States, and they treat Muslims as anti-Semitic genetically almost as if the hatred of Jews was not a European phenomenon and a Christian. This example

made anonymously on the blog Rue89 is fairly typical:

On the word "Islamophobia", we also strongly disagree: it is a word that was invented by the Muslim Brotherhood to prevent any criticism of Islam. However, criticism of religion (all religions) is perfectly legal in the West - in France it is almost a national sport and we love to "eat the priest." What seems worrying to us Westerners is that some Muslims demand special treatment and regard any questioning of Islam as "racism". This is stupid: Islam is not a "race", there are Muslims of all colors.

It is easy to show the flaws in these arguments. /.../ See more here ...
